the trend of hollywood casting established black female characters as biracial girls/women, a thread:
Storm, one of the few black female superheroes, who’s depicted as darkskin through out is casted as halle berry in x-men
the infamous nia simone biopic which casted zoe saldana as nia simone. notice how they darken her skin and give her fake nose protestic. hollywood would rather put a biracial woman in black face than cast a black woman
in divergent, christina was was described as having darkskin is played by zoe kravitz. i couldn’t find the book quote but here’s a ss of a document showcasing her character description
in the hate you give amandla stenberg is casted as the lead despite the book cover depicting a darkskin girl. there’s irony that even a movie about police brutality won’t cast a darkskin black girl
in the new @netflix tv show, the only black girl in the babysitters club is replaced with a biracial girl
riri williams/ironheart is voiced by biracial actress sofia wylie in short animated series, despite riri being depicted as darkskin in the comic books. i hope @disney @marvel isn’t planning on taking away 1 of the few rep darkskin black girls have
changing the mom from darkskin to lightskin on raising dion on @netflix
while we’re at it, let me dive into the whitening of black characters during redesigns in kids shows.
changing orange blossom from strawberry shortcake from this to this , they took away her kinky hair and lightened her skin, redesign done by @WildBrainHQ
and most recently, in A Babysitters Guide To Monsterhunting, both of the the darkskin girls are replaced with biracial girls, also done by @netflix who seems to dislike black girls in particular
and this is just characters that are SUPPOSED to be black girls, tv in general since the 2000s have been excluding black female characters @naysmulti pointed out that main black girls on @Nickelodeon have all been biracial and lightskin
i made this thread because i just think it’s sad how the media has gone backwards in terms of representation, i wish gen z girls could have a tv show like moesha and have characters like ashley from fresh prince, where black girls are seen and given proper storylines.
someone pointed how @disney made tiana look mixed in the 2nd wreck it ralph movie, only changing her design after backlash from the black community, black women in particular.
alexandra shipp has been casted for the last way role of storm, when kiki layne and her team tried to get the role, alexandra angrily said “i don’t have to be the colour of a crayon”

https://twitter.com/blairsmus/status/1293676214582902792?s=21 marvel nerds r angry at this, my issue isn’t the skin colour or race of the voice actor, it’s that i hope in the future when they do make a live action they don’t make riri biracial, that’s why i said “planning” because it seems like disney is on that path https://twitter.com/blairsmus/status/1293676214582902792
