Let me give you a good example on this one, since we all have experience with this sort of thing sometime down the road.

You all remember pink eye? That eye goop some kid who is in your elementary school got, and then they were told to stay home for two weeks? https://twitter.com/da_667/status/1293393036706226181
Do you remember what happened when one of the kids who had it DIDN'T stay home from school, and came in all gross? They didn't stop touching everything in the classroom and outside! They touched you, they touched their friends, they even touched the teachers!
Then you got pink eye. And their friends got pink eye. And the teachers got pink eye. And it was goopy, it was sticky, and it was terrible. And even if you stayed home, the damage was done at this point, it's already infecting the next classroom, and maybe some parents.
Now, imagine this sort of unchecked virulence around something that's contagious before it gets to symptomatic. And it kills people. It kills your friends. It kills your teachers. It comes home to your parents.

That's what going back to school now has the potential to do.
Side note: pink eye is a symptom of COVID-19.
