Hey @mikiebarb @Jonesieman I'm listening to this right now and it's really bothering me that even though you're willing to call Amy Cooper's behavior "clearly racist," you're only willing to call JK Rowling's comments "perceived to be transphobic." I'm a long-time listener (1/2)
and while this is far from the first episode of "The Daily" I've listened to, as a member of the LGBT community it's the first episode of "The Daily" that I've found to be hurtful. I'm going to finish the episode but I'm no longer enjoying the experience. (2/2)
Postscript: finishing the episode only granted exposure to another example of 'people think this' fence sitting, at around the 30 minute mark, where the speaker seemingly broke the flow of their own sentence to make sure they didn't reveal their own opinion.
Please think about whatever considerations compelled you to be honest about racism and apply those considerations to being honest about transphobia. Capitulating to people who don't want to see transphobia acknowledged is done at the expense of those affected by transphobia.
To be clear, I acknowledge that I don't know your motivations, but I can't infer an explanation that isn't disappointing. And the rest of the episode was fine. But if you do think Rowling's arguments are transphobic, it'd be cool if you could share that with the class next time.
Some people have said they might have the impression of perceiving in their opinion that perhaps unintentionally maybe this contradiction could illustrate that "The Daily"s willingness to acknowledge specific incidents of prejudice hinges on who is the victim of the prejudice.
That's it, all I had to say, end thread.
