In August of 2018, I convinced my Creative Directors to give me a couple of months off, to move to Toronto and see what it was like to work in a studio of comic artists I had found. It would be one of the most important decisions of my life
I'm an American politics nut - Actually, just before DC offered me my first full issue on Batman and the Outsiders, I was all set to start a Masters in US Foreign Policy here in Dublin. I'm a full time comics artist now, so I think we know what choice I happily made!
While living in Toronto, I organised a second trip, like a mini holiday - It was the first time I'd been to North America in a long time, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to finally visit Washington D.C.
For a political junky, even though I had organised the trip months in advance, I ended up flying into D.C. right in the middle of the Kavanaugh hearings. It was such a crazy and divisive time to find yourself at the Capitol, and there was no way I was going to miss it
In the dead heat of a Washington summer, I found the building, queued up in the sun with so many people of all walks of life with so many stories to tell, and got to sit in on those hearings. I was there as women were hauled out by the police for protesting
I listened to the most harrowing story told by one of the 16 year old Parkland survivors of how she was kept away from her mother as the police processed the crime scene for hours, and when they were reunited, her mother picked bits of her friends out of her hair. Pure horror
I'll never forget it. I don't remember crying like that, the wonderful @CoryBooker was moved to tears... it was shocking. Being in Washington DC over those few days was harrowing, and righteous, and another moment in a difficult history
I stumbled out of that senate building. I think the weight of so many things I'd enjoyed from a purely academic standpoint were manifest that day in a way you'd never be able to plan. On the way out, I walked past the office of @KamalaHarris
I saw her through the glass door with some of her staff, and I went to knock on the glass to tell her how much I respected her, and her career, and what she was doing in the Senate. I had loads of things to say, and in the end, I didn't because I didn't think it was my place
I've always thought she was a fantastic person, a wonderful politician, and I've got my Kamala for the People T-shirt here- I think she is entirely the right choice for VP. But I can tell you right now, not knocking on that glass door might be one of my biggest regrets!
Joe Biden is the right choice for president. Kamala Harris is the right choice for Vice President. I hope that any friends or followers of mine who are in a position to do so, register and vote now- this is the most important election of our lifetimes and the world depends on it.
