My department has a grading policy, which I disagree with, where only a max of 25% of the class can get an A, and a full 25% of the class has to get a grade below 68%. I told a student about this policy, and now I'm worried I'm going to get in trouble for telling her 😬
I have no idea if this policy is a secret or not, if it is then fuck that I will fight them on it, but I'm also just getting this weird sense that I'm gonna get in shit for this somehow. Academia sucks
Like I know that certain grading policies are necessary to prevent grade inflation but this shit is draconian and has no wiggle room. I literally have to lower a bunch of students' grades to meet this policy. It sucks
Like to be clear, most of the time (especially in a big class) the grades fall kinda naturally along these lines anyway but I definitely had to do a few grading adjustments to fit the percentages for each assignment/exam and it made me very mad every time
Oh also profs can argue for an exception for a particularly engaged class, but my guess is that if you do that more than once or twice you get put under pressure. The whole thing stinks
Seems like it would be a lot simpler and more fair to just require a 75% overall average and let the instructors sort it out, but hey I'm not a university administrator!
