I love the higher ed social and communications community across social media.

We all started knowing a little and terrified of making big mistakes. It’s natural.
u2028But that’s how we learn. Creating content demands that we experiment in public.
It’s magical.u2028

So seeing posts tearing down others’ work or communities makes me angry.
I admit there are times I fail to brighten my corner of the world. I can do better. But I’ve never tore down someone else in public.

All of us as content creators make their living on platforms that evolve *every* day. So sometimes, not knowing something is a sign we’re still learning and adapting.
Mistakes reveal opportunities to improve.
Mistakes are *not* a sign that we don’t care about our jobs and communities, however. They’re not a sign that we embraced tacky practices on purpose.
Sometimes I don’t know something because I’m busy doing twenty *other* things.

My work asks me to:
• Oversee strategy
• Oversee multiple websites
• Write content
• Design, write, and code email
• Serve as photographer and videographer
• Create social media content
• Fundraise
• Recruit
• Proofread
• Manage two CRMs
I love it. LOVE.

But there& #39;s a cost to doing so much: it’s impossible to know everything about everything. u2028
There will be gaps in knowledge. My resources will be stretched thin.u2028
Many people on small teams—or teams of one!

So context matters.
We should stop with the shaming of other’s mistakes. That’s not teaching.u2028 That’s using your knowledge to make others feel small.
And that’s not what this community is, or should be, about.

We work in education. u2028Education is about lifting each other up. u2028It’s about sharing ideas and learning .
Show me the teacher who mocks students’ mistakes in front of the whole class, and I’ll show you a mean teacher.
We must remember *all* of us are the students.

You shouldn’t feel good denigrating someone else’s work.
You shouldn’t congratulate yourself if your circle appears more accomplished than someone else’s.
Feeling smug says more about you than anyone else.

Our field is filled with incredible people who put their work out there to tens-of-thousands of followers. Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes it needs work.
That’s brave.
Taking shots from the sidelines isn’t.
