Imo, open source as a community endeavor is falling apart right before our eyes, and being replaced by open source as Big Corp entrenchment strategy.

I mean it's been happening for a while, but seeing Mozilla sinking like this is just driving the point home for me.

FOSS is dead

The open web is nothing but a dream now. It's literally just going to be a tug of war between Apple and Everyone Else, and Apple isn't going to win this one even with all their gatekeeping. They can only hold out so long.

We need new models if we want software freedom to be a thing going forward. And we're going to have to face the harsh truth that developer time costs money and we can either leave that to corporations (who demand control)...

... Or we can find another way to pay people for work

And seriously, free software really really needs a better value proposition than "janky third party software that kind of sucks but is free compared to expensive company stuff"
