Let's recall what the WE "scandal" is abt: Was WE chosen out of favouritism by PMJT? It's now clear the answer is NO.
2nd questn: Shld PMJT have "recused" himself under COIA? To be determined by Ethics Commissioner, not by Opposition. Parliament gave that right away.
3rd questn:
Was WE a good choice? That is a purely administrative issue, not an "ethics" or conflict of interest question. It's proper IMO for Finance Cmtee to look at that.
The imprtnt thing to keep in mind is that Parliament by statute has given an impartial Ethics Commissioner sole pwr to
determine whether a public office holder (incl. a Prime Minister) has complied w/ the COIA. Parliament had and still has pwr to hold Govt to account (3rd questn), but it doesn't have the pwr to judge an individual public office holder's conduct, only Ethics Commissioner does.
As a consequence, the Ethics Committee has no power to investigate the conduct of an individual public office holder, even if he or she is a minister of the Crown. #cdnpoli
Another thought: Ppl calling for FM Moreau to be dismissed are forgetting that he too is entitled to the benefit of a doubt pending a decision by the Ethics Commission. Just b/c an oppo MP asked EC to look into it, doesn't tell us what the EC will decide.
