I'm starting the PhD next month, so discount accordingly. But I've worked outside academia for a decade, and want to say that this advice feels true only for a subset of alternative paths. There may not be a job for me in academia. If not, I'll most likely be writing; not coding. https://twitter.com/stan_okl/status/1293582719897620480
I have a JD, which also opens up a different field. The writing I do in the future, if it's not in academia, might be policy memos or legal briefs; idk yet. But I feel confident that I *personally* will benefit most from coursework on race/inequality, rather than endless methods.
In fact, the further away I move from academia—and specifically from political science—the *less* important quant methods is likely to be for my work. It may be diff for you! If your alternative is working at Facebook, go deep in data analysis. But point is: it's individualized.
Also, to be clear, I very much enjoyed and appreciated this thread—and all the great discussion on Twitter about non-academic paths—and only wanted to offer this as a friendly amendment to one particular point!
