As bad at the Pac12 has been, I don’t think they have much of a choice.

The #WeWantToPlay movement from players includes a giant caveat: we want to play only if the schools take all the liability.
The schools did their reasearch and said, “yeah it doesn’t make sense to play, there’s way too much that can go wrong including long term heart issues that open us up to decades of future liability.”
When the players come back and say “but #WeWantToPlay” they are saying “ #WeWantToPlayWhileReservingTheRightToSueYouWhenThingInevitablyGoWrong
The big difference between the Pac12 and the SEC is essentially an actuarial difference. The SEC says, “our math equation is showing it’s worth it to have a season now and pay out when we get sued,”
While the Pac12 is saying “our math shows it’s better to lose a season now rather than pay players or their families if they die, for decades later.”
Basically it boils down to the players really overplaying their hand.

Demanding schools to shoulder all liability before playing and then acting schocked when the schools cancel is a “well well well consequences of my own actions” moment.
This is before even factoring in the demand to get paid 50% of football all revenues *during a global pandemic* with athletic budgets staring down the barrel of $100M budget shortfalls.
If you want to take a wider view, Some blame should be shouldered by the NCAA/Pac12 for letting it get to this point and not having a pay solution figured out now. But short term they are without options but to cancel the season.
