THREAD: Analysis on Lucas Torreira time at 'The Arsenal'. In this thread, I provide my in depth thoughts on his time so far at Arsenal and whether we should keep or sell him. Would mean a lot to me if you could RT so that more Gooners can see this. Enjoy! 😁🔴
I think awe were all very excited with the acquisition of LT back in the summer of 2018. He was very impressive in the world cup, with a standout display against Ronaldo's Portugal. Initially, in Emery's first year, he opted for a Guendouzi-Xhaka pivot. Whilst Matteo started well
with a few encouraging performances, it wasn't a sustainable, midfield partnership in the long run because, out of possession, there wasn't the tenacity and bite which was required, particularly when playing against the big teams. Two opening games against Man City and Chelsea
provides evidence for this. Eventually LT came in, got his chance and took it well. Breaking up play, interceptions, blocks, tackles e.c.t. He was a breath of fresh air. Although there were plenty of cracks and flaws in the unbeaten run under Unai, the partnership developed
between Xhaka and LT was strong. Xhaka providing the progression from deep, breaking the lines and LT providing the tenacity and getting around the pitch. Standout performance was obviously the NLD win at the Emirates. Privileged to of went to that game and he was sensational!
Both complimented each others attributes and it was similar, although not as good, to the Coquelin- Cazorla pivot. I do think that, come January in 2019, we started to see a drop in his levels. Signs of him burning out were evident to me and his form was a worry towards the end
of the 18/19 campaign. Now lets jump to this season and the way he was badly mismanaged under Emery. The shock to all of us was the advanced positions he took, playing at times as an attacking midfielder. Bizarre! The way I see it is that in terms of productivity (G/A), decision
making in the final third, weight of pass in between the lines, vision e.c.t, he doesn't provide that. He's a player who should be playing deep, and tasked to provide energy out of possession and protect the back line. He has no use to us when playing in these areas. He was
even playing further forward than Mesut when the German featured. Arteta came in and we restored to basics. 4-2-3-1, with a balanced midfield pivot of LT-Xhaka and Ozil in the whole, pre COVID-19. Xhaka providing forward passes that break the lines, pinging diagonal passes and
providing progression from deep. LT back in a more defensive position, maintaining within close proximity to Xhaka and limiting Granit's defensive responsibilities. Ozil tasked to drift in between the lines and provide creativity. Again, LT provided solid performances.
Then came the point where Arteta favoured a Xhaka-Ceballos pivot. Initially I wasn't sure about this partnership as there was uncertainty as to whether Dani good provide the same levels of performance to LT out of possession. But Dani showed to be very capable. Winning Tackles
interception, tracking players and supporting Granit were aspects implemented into his game. The stats, post lockdown, show how influential he has been out of possession. In possession, he's a class above LT. Dani is a more press resistant player. He has the ability to receive.
the ball in between the CB's and provide progression through either providing forward passes or carrying the ball from deep and taking players out of the game.
He is also a far more consistent line breaker than LT. It was clear to me that Dani offered more to the side. Strong out of possession, just like LT. But on the ball, he is far more influential and is more technically gifted. Post lockdown, LT made a few cameo appearances. But..
personally, I felt his performance levels dropped. Physically, he seemed to struggle and looked a yard short in terms of the pace of the game. His drop in form at the back end of this season was very similar to the previous campaign.
Its a tricky situation. I like LT and I think he has a lot of desirable attributes. The way he is able to get around the pitch, provide energy and intensity out of possession and break up play is attractive. He is also press resistant, just like Dani and is able to receive the..
ball deep from the keeper and be composed in those areas. Key example where he showed this was against Palace at Selhurst Park in the first half, before he went off injured. But Dani does this better. In terms of his play on the ball, he offers no where near as much when..
compared to Dani. He is similar to Fred. They provide tenacity, legs, and get around the pitch but don't have the discipline to play as a lone 6. And offensively, they don't provide the influence that is required. Both aren't able to drift in between the lines and create.
Having said all of this, he is a player that I rate. Initially, I didn't want to sell him as I do see his qualities. But then I thought about it and I think the key is to be smart in this window and in future ones. He is an asset and if an offer comes in that is above the 26M
We paid Sampdoria, take the money. Whilst he has a lot of traits that suit us, he clearly still hasn't settled in England. Lot of rumours surfacing throughout his time here were that he was homesick along with both him and his agent always seem to be flirting with a move
back to Italy. On top of this, I think he does struggle with the physical aspect of the English game. Dani Ceballos has shown to be an upgrade and I would have him here next season, if the opportunity arises as we are aware over the past few days that Real may want to
keep him. Move him on, and use that money to invest in another player with greater quality, i.e Partey. A lot more physical, power, steel, engine as well as possessing good qualities in possession such as his strong passing range.
I can see LT shinning at a club across Europe as he is a player who does have plenty of potential and is still only 24. But he is a sellable asset, along with Guendouzi, who can help raise funds.
Liverpool are the blueprint and the reason why they are in a very sustainable, healthy and competitive position is because of the way they have approached the market both in terms of incomings and outgoings. They sold players for huge money, reinvested into others who..
suit the style that Klopp is looking to implement. And look at them now. They operate in a similar fashion to us. Self sustaining. We finally have a few sellable assets now and in my opinion, we should exploit this! Interested to know your thoughts🔴🔴🔴
