I'm a Black man married to a Gujarati woman (2nd gen). We're raising two black boys and are very clear about our thoughts on identity. We have discussed Kamala Harris many times before and always knew we would continue to talk about her.

Since yesterday, I have seen a bunch of support for Kamala Harris from the Indian community, and rightfully so. Indians are extremely proud people and hella supportive of one another. Fam, HELLA supportive.

But I hope anti-Blackness within the Indian community is being discussed in the same breath as that support and excitement. Because there is A LOT to address in Desi communities around anti-Blackness.

And anti-Blackness is present not only in the diverse communities in India, but also in communities of the Indian diaspora. Especially in the USA, UK, Canada, and South Africa.

Here are my two asks for my Indian brethren and sistren as you lift Kamala up: when celebrating/supporting/claiming her, (1) make it clear that she's a Black woman and (2) discuss y'all feelings towards Black people as a community.
