A few years ago, I subtitled a few episodes of @tomscott's Citation Needed series, with the help of @yesitsratih. We used YouTube's Community Translations feature.

We didn't expect anything in return, we just thought Community Translations were a great place to practice our translation skills.

Little did we know, it helped some of our friends too.

Even before then, I found joy in translating English texts to Indonesian.

I decided to continue by contributing Indonesian translations to the @reactjs docs, eventually becoming the core maintainer of the project.

Our work is far from finished, but we're getting there.

For me, when I translate any form of content to Indonesian (documentation, subtitles, etc.), it's more than just keeping our mother tongue alive.

A majority of Indonesians still lack even the most basic English comprehension.

Even if you have the most well-written content you've ever written, the message won't go through if you don't cater to these people.

Accessibility is more than just providing access to content the disabled. It's also allowing people across the world to enjoy your content, regardless of their language comprehension.

Subtitles is a way to achieve that, but proper translation works better.
