American politics were created to be a system where people voted then held the elected officials accountable. Granted, in its inception it was white men only, but now we all have that opportunity.
Since there will never be a perfect candidate, no matter the level, we are meant to get behind the candidates that we feel confident we can hold accountable for their actions.

Stop looking for perfection and be realistic with your expectations. It creates space for more hope.
Candidates can change their position while in office because they gain a deeper understanding of the issue than before. (Obama on Same sex marriage)

So let's vote for candiates who are teachable, welcomes accountability, apologizes, and listens to a diverse set of voices.
We will never become a better America if the only way we engage in politics is through a vote and a prayer. It is not meant to be that way. You must then engage and push to get issues on their desks. Remind them this isn't for the own personal gain but for the gain of the people.
