Seeing a lot of Montrealers debate American presidential politics (which is fun) with a fervour that I’d love to see on local issues.
We the media need to do a better job telling those stories.
If we could bring the same intensity to the Biden-Sanders-Warren-Harris debate to borough council elections, to the National Assembly, to our local MPs, we’d foster more accountability.
Not an easy task. We need to do better as reporters, tell more interesting stories...
...write from the ground up. Too many of our articles feel like they come from an office or a place of comfort. We should — when resources allow — strive to work in the dark places, with the people whose lives are affected or devastated by policy that happens far from their homes
Again, it’s fun to debate American politics. They feel more consequential, they’re packaged like an NFL Sunday showdown but they’re far less meaningful to the lives of our friends, neighbours and the most vulnerable among us than actual local issues. Politics is local.
I look at it this way: what can you add to the US debate that hasn't already been said 1,000 times? Probably not much because -- as outsiders -- we're limited to what we see on the news, twitter, etc. On the other hand, you have so much to contribute to local conversations.
Like, Harris went to Westmount High School and we're going to play that angle to death and we're going to joke about how we're going to play that angle to death. Which is fun. But by the 4,576th time you hear the joke...
