Hispanic became popular after the 1980 census. It centers the Spanish colonizers. Hispania is the latinized origin name for España.

Latina/o/x focuses on Latin American based communities which is inclusive of Brazil whose history includes colonization by the Portuguese.

While Roman languages are gendered, language creates and reinforces the values and ideals of the people. Objects are not the same as peoples. Language that prioritizes one gender over another reinforces a gendered-social hierarchy.

U.S. students still prioritize "man" over "human." The preference of Latino over Latinx is based on this similar socialization that prioritizes maleness over humanity.

At the end of the day, Latinx is an umbrella category for individuals who choose not to identify by their nationality or gender. Most folks feel a closer connection to their nationality or direct roots.

Expecting a consensus term to identify over 30 countries and territories, diaspora communities, and many indigenous communities is a fantasy of the colonial mindset that still endures.

The value of Latinx is its disruptive nature at the moment; that it disrupts simplistic labels at this time with regard to gender and ethnicity.
