Why is it for migrants to justify our right to exist on any particular land? "I am fleeing war", "I contribute to the economy", etc. No. It should be fr YOU to justify why you are obstructing me, there is no obvious logical or moral reason that makes yours the default position.
While there is racism and all forms bigotry in the UK, most people automatically agree that discrimination on the grounds of various characteristics is unacceptable. But not when it comes to "place of birth". No. Discrimination on that basis is perfectly normal. Why?
What entitles you to rights on this piece of land more than me who wasn't born here? You should have to justify it because it is not at all obvious. And if you want to progress migrant rights you need to be asking that question too, we need to break this down at its core
People who want to argue that it is OK to discriminate against people on the basis of where they were born should be made to say so explicitly and face up to the fact that it is a xenophobic position. Actually it is literally the definition of xenophobia.
I get it that coming to terms with the fact that you support racist, xenophobic and inhumane acts is difficult but we need to be able to correctly identify things as they are and stop hiding behind faux civility and respectability.
And while it is absolutely true that nobody (literally nobody) is immune to bigotry and prejudice, they do go hand in hand with right-wing politics. I'm sorry if this hurts, if you want leftwingers to be your friend or whatever but facts don't care https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1293196614266507267?s=20
Anyway what is the point of all this? I guess I want those of us engaged in politics to be honest and bold when speaking about these issues. Eg when Tories are ramping up anti migrant rhetoric @UKLabour MUST identify that and criticise it rather than talk about "competence".
Timidity on this issue did not help Corbyn's Labour and it won't help now either. Assuming you care about migrant rights, you need to start changing the conversation NOW. Many would argue the UK public is not ready, they never will be if someone doesn't make a start.
I did think that having a PM and Immigration minister with views like this would have been a good start. Not perfect, not nearly enough but a start. Anyway that's over now but one thing I am taking away is to never again trust those that obstructed it https://twitter.com/jeremycorbyn/status/1292859554347327488?s=20
