Thanks #EconTwitter! I'm going to start suggesting randomizing w/ my coauthors. Especially because "L" frequently puts me first for no good reason. And it might be a difficult thing for coauthors, especially more-junior coauthors, to bring up. As for the costs ... 1/4 https://twitter.com/jasonmlindo/status/1293227062241656841
Switching to random author ordering is largely a transfer, and one that seems appropriate. Might it lead to some confusion about contributions? Perhaps but there's already confusion, and can be clarified where it matters (e.g. in acknowledgments, on CVs, tenure packets, etc.) 2/4
Sorry for not having reached this conclusion sooner coauthors with later alphabetized last names! But it's not too late if our work isn't published yet :) @IsaacDSwensen @analisapackham @GlenWaddell @MayraPinedaT @MaraPadillaR @dave_marcotte @Caitlin_K_Myers @SiminskiPeter 3/4
Given what we know about the effects of author order, I think it's especially important for senior folks and those who benefit from the alphabetical convention to broach the subject with their coauthors. 4/4
