I'm a Black girl whose math ability is questioned forever despite *majoring* in Math and I take PERSONAL offense to "Got an F?" followed by the condescending "Good job" towards the Black girl and the laughter from the other non-Black girls that affirms the remark. @cut

A thread/ https://twitter.com/Shimekaveli/status/1293333627061837830
Black girls are consistently told at every stage, by everyone, that we can't do math, which is sexist and racist.

@DaniaFrancis and co-authors show that counselors under recommend Black girls for AP Calculus courses in high school.

In the video, the girl who makes the comment is Filipino, and this is reason #9026 why POC =/= Black.

She is young, but she is not stupid and ultimately the comment she shares is a reflection of biases she picked up from her parents and her environment.

3/
Let's also talk about the two NON BLACK girls laughing. This is such a perfect example of how microaggressions work.

The comment laughed at is problematic. They *know* that, and yet their smiles cement the Black Girl's discomfort. Also, no one defends the Black girl AT ALL.

4/
I think what makes me most upset is that you HEAR adult voices in the room.

So you mean to tell me that none of the @cut staff saw a problem with the comment/ addressed it to affirm the Black Girl's rightful discomfort?

Y'all are actually trash for that.

I am going to need folx to say this with me:

BLACK GIRLS CAN DO MATH.

Stop teaching your kids otherwise. If you want some math books centering Black girls cc @helainebecker @VashtiHarrison & @blkgirlmathgic, the @Beyonce approved math subscription box for Black girls.

SHOUTOUT TO SIS saying she got an A. Of course you did. You're smart and intelligent. That girl didn't know what to say after that because you debunked her learned biases. Where are her parents? @cut

Look at this: @cut with the #BLM statement, and yet here we are. Several disappointed Black people later. @cut definitely want to see you maybe purchase @blkgirlmathgic for the #HiHoKids so we don't see this kind of behavior again.

I broke down why telling Black girls that they cannot do math is problematic in this thread. All I'll say is in the coming week or so, EVERYONE will know that Black girls (and people) can and DO math.

The more I replay the video, the angrier I get honestly.

I genuinely and deeply feel the disappointment, anger, shock, and sadness of the Black girl. That said, @cut my DMS are open, let me put you on.

Thanks for coming TED Talk.

Y'ALL MY FAVORITE ILLUSTRATOR IN THE WORLD @VashtiHarrison FOUND THIS THREAD. ahhhhhhhh
Also, @cut why the HELL did this micro aggression make it into the final cut? You mean to tell me that people reviewed the footage, edited it, reviewed it again, and published it? And in the same breath y'all are saying BLM? This telling of the diversity behind the scenes @cut.
Let me also go ahead and do a shameless plug: In 2023, I am publishing a children's book that centers Dr. Sadie Alexander, America's First Black economist. It will be centering her mathematical ability @HMHKids @StonesongNYC. You can learn more below: https://twitter.com/itsafronomics/status/1290306620715487235?s=20
And wouldn't you know it: @cut team is 40 shades of BEIGE. You hate to see it. There is not a single Black person on staff and that's why it was business as usual. Do better y'all. Again my DMs are open. https://cut.com/people
*deep sigh* https://twitter.com/Pixelxilla/status/1293431037155061761?s=20
Keep sharing this thread. There is some healing happening. There's some education happening.

Good vibes all around. Also, if someone can help me identify that Black girl in the video, I want to send her some of the books I mentioned! @cut #HiHoKids
It's the @Wikipedia @Wikimedia endorsement for me. https://twitter.com/Wikipedia/status/1293637173913120768?s=20
This might be my longest thread yet, but someone pointed out another thing. The editors/producers paused the music right after the comment is made. So they were hip and they still published it w/o addressing it? WOW. https://twitter.com/micro_Yasha/status/1293647136643600384?s=20
Y'all the other Dr. Blackstock @DrOniBee found this thread!!! Hi Dr. Blackstock :D
I will end this thread finally with two important things:

1) @cut please purchase @blkgirlmathgic for the #HiHoKids

2) @cut or someone else, please connect me with the Black girl so I can get her these math books!

Thanks for tuning in! Until next time.
Wooooooow so I went back to try to link the video and they hid it (which was probably a good idea).
