Ironic if the Brexit objective of national reinvention is achieved through the dissolution of the union.
What if that plucky swashbuckling sovereign nation state isn’t the UK but it’s actually England.
What if the Brexit legacy is not national consensus but the magnification of differences to the point of unsustainability.
What if Brexit was the tipping point for Scottish independence because it demonstrated that the Conservative party cared a great deal about the union but hardly at all about Scotland.
If you’re Brexit objective was English nationalism then you might win beyond your wildest dreams. But if you’re objective was Global Britain? Not so much.
The more I think about it the more I wonder if we may end up concluding that EU membership was most important to the UK because it acted as a powerful centripetal force for the union.
If you were from NI and didn’t care much for England you could largely live your life as if you were Irish and European.
If you were from Scotland and didn’t care much for England you could largely live your life as if you were European.
But now. Not so much. Brexit has taken from people something they valued. Worse, their views, feelings, emotions etc have been entirely spurned.

What do you think happens next?
