It’s week three of three of the Wednesday Saphos charters from the south west, with Royal Scot and Britannia double-heading over the banks to Plymouth. My GPS is set-up, the toplights are wide open and breakfast is incoming. Perfect! @BBCDevon @N60BRA
Here’s 46100 and 70000 taking on water at Taunton. A nice - if hot! - run so far with a max of 73 on the levels (hit 71 prior to slowing for Oldfield Park, so failed the 75 challenge) but the best bit of the day - Whiteball and the banks - are to come.
Oh so close to an even-time Taunton - Exeter run; the Brit and Scot ran the 30 miles 60 chains in 31mins10secs.

Both locos snarled on the climb to Whiteball - 58.5mph onto the tunnel and it took 11mins57secs from Taunton.

Tiverton Parkway passed at 70.5mph but we were eased.
Watering at Newton Abbott.
29.1 into Dainton tunnel and 43.5 into Marley for those who are interested.
There’s a barrier in the way, so this is the best shot that I could get of the Scot and Brit at #Plymouth station. While the train is turned and serviced on the Laira triangle, I’m going to wander to the Hoe for an ice-cream. Gorgeous day here. @BBCDevon
All set for the return leg back to Bristol.
Wonderful bark from both locos up Hemerdon. 34.9 min. Think there was a bit of assistance halfway up the climb but I can’t be 100% sure.
27.4 into Dainton.
Here are a few shots of 46100 + 70000 at Exeter St David’s. A contrived way of watering - locos detch, run to Riverside Yard and then water in P2 before doing the same in reverse, thanks to the new GWR depot blocking tanker access to P6.
OK, I know it is a 14P double-header on ~ load 13/14 so there’s more than enough grunt for the weight, but we just stormed Whiteball. 75.7min going into the tunnel.
Final pic from today’s trip - here’s 46100 + 70000 at BTM this evening. Loved the three @SaphosTrains Wednesday charters and it’ll take a lot to beat them in the future. I’ve covered 789 miles behind steam in the last three weeks; hats off to the team for their superb hospitality
Turns out this thread isn’t quite finished yet. Was - and still am - waiting for the train home when I heard a whistle. Assumed it was 46100 + 70000 leaving Barton Hill for home, but they came through BTM to turn.
