Good morning white feminists who are happy that Kamala Harris is the Dem VP, it's now time for you to roll up your sleeves and show online allyship. The next 3 months will be awful for Harris, African American women & Jamaicans (yep the stereotyping has started). Don't be silent.
Don't scroll through and think to yourselves, "oo that's awful." No. We know Black women are 84% more likely to face online abuse. So its time now to organise.
Tips...

Help report and document the abuse Some trolls will be paid, some organised, some will show patterns. We need the data & evidence to report & update digital security & self care plans. You can then create block lists!

2. There will be a lot of misinformation.
For some patriarchal reason, misinformation when it comes to women is seen as just gossip when it's actually a threat to politically active women's lives and careers AND our democracy. So...
Don't spread 'fake news' check sources before sharing. Educate others on how to spot fake news - especially old fake tweets. Spread the correct information to drawn out the hate and lies.

Donate to fact checkers in the US.
I hope / predict more Black women will be invited to share political analysis and reflections on key issues for African Americans in the media... so finally tips...
Journalists lived experience is important but don't victimise and stereotype. There's never a good time to be sexist or racist but especially during the campaign. We don't need your isms to now distract and become the story.
Oh and Journalists... Don't report family gossip or dig up ex lovers. Learn lessons from what you did to Meghan Markle.

Also we need to not give these stories our attention or outrage (they are baiting us)
Share, support, amplify the Black women giving sharing brilliant expertise in the media. Follow them on social media and help them through the backlash. Also see tip 1 on documenting abuse.
Finally support Black Women's #Digitalselfcare. Encourage them to develop and commit to online personal boundaries. The next few months are going to gruelling while also inspirational for many. The online abuse will cause a ripple of trauma and avoiding burnout will be paramount!
