Literacy rates may be rising, but people are worse at understanding the Classics than they were 100 years ago
There are two kinds of literacy, but we only measure one of them.

1) Street sign literacy: Being able to read signs and directions, and we’re getting better at this.

2) Library literacy: Being able to understand logic or the nuance in an argument — but we don’t measure this.
“Are we actually getting worse at deep reading?”

With 70% confidence, my answer is yes. But maybe reading comprehension is rising along with literacy rates. The point is that we don’t even have the data to understand trends in “Library Literacy,” and we should change that.
