Today I gave a lecture on "Moving Beyond Nightingale" in a workshop with new faculty. I talked about why and how Nightingale became an icon in nursing & why that is a problem. /1
I argued Nightingale is a problematic icon in nursing because:
1. Flawed Chronology = nursing has a much longer history than a focus on Nightingale suggests. I gave many examples, but I'm especially grateful for @ErinSpinney and her work on British naval/military nursing in 1700s
2. The focus on Nightingale centers the experience of white women nurses. I talked about Mary Seacole, Edith Monture and @KarenFlynnPhD work on Black nurses in Canada (so grateful for Karen's important work).
3. Nurses were/are not always heroes. I talked about nurses' participation in unethical human experimentation, incl. Tuskegee Syphilis Study, but also why it's problematic to make a Black nurse THE prime ex of an unethical nurse. We need more complicated histories.
Needless to say, it was a great day! Loved sharing my work with other new faculty!!
