A Kamala Harris- HBCU funding thread: On this historic day let's discuss a favorite talking point of Trump fans. Harris is an HBCU grad (Howard University) but Trump supporters say "he increased HBCU funding by 14%." Let's talk about that. 1/
A reminder, in February 2018 Congress passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. One of the driving forces was President Trump’s desire to greatly increase military spending. Democrats used it as an opportunity for increased domestic spending. The Act increased discretionary spending by 21% over the cap. On 2/22/18, 14 Senators, led by Kamala Harris and Doug Jones began lobbying for HBCU funding. Here is the letter. 3/

They write "As you prepare to finalize the FY 2018 appropriations process, we request that you restore and increase federal support to our nation’s HBCUs... We ask for an increase in funding in the FY 2018 appropriations bill..." 4/

The Senate and House approved the increase, and it was part of the over $1T budget. Advocacy groups like Thurgood Marshall College Fund praised the work. 5/

So y'all stop giving away credit that belongs to Black women. Senator Harris has a record of advocating for HBCUs, not simply signing popular legislation.
