Breaking Down wilt chamberlains stats
1. Understanding pace

Pace in the 60s was alot higher than right now. Teams back then averaged anywhere from 115 possessions to 132 possessions. And now teams averaged 100.3 possessions Which means they had alot more opportunities to score, grab rebounds, and rack up assists.
Back then teams also played there stars alot more. Right now the guy who leads the NBA in MPG Damian lillard averages 37.3 MPG and in 1962 there were 12 players averaging 37.3 or More minutes. So its clear why numbers from The 60s look so good.
lets compare wilts possessions to other great big man

In wilts in his prime played 119.1 poss.

Kareem in his prime he played 89.2 poss.

Duncan in his prime he played 68.5 poss.

In Hakeems prime he played 75.8 poss.

In Shaqs prime he played 72.1 poss.

*not there team*
2. His scoring

Now that we went through possessions we can now understand why his numbers look so good. So we can look at his scoring

In 1962 wilt averaged 50.4 PPG but he played over 131 possessions per game

So if we look at his highest scoring season per 75 possessions
1962 wilt averaged 50.4 PPG (28.7 PPG per 75 poss.)

In 1963 wilt averaged 44.8 PPG (27.5 PPG per 75 poss.)

In 1961 wilt averaged 38.6 PPG (21.9 PPG per 75 poss.)

Now if ur wondering how good or bad this is, wilts best scoring season is 28.7 PPG per 75 possessions
That would rank 65th in PPG among all time per 75 poss. Seasons

(And if ur wondering why i used per 75 possessions its because that’s about the amount of possessions most stars play today)
Now was wilts scoring even good for his team?

Well Wilt in 7 scoring title seasons:
• 22-30 playoff record
• 1 finals appearances
• often one of the words defenses in the NBA

Wilt in his lower scoring years:
• 55-35 playoff record
• 4 finals appearances
• 2 rings
Now ur probably gonna say “obviously he won more in his lower scoring years he had more help”

But most of The time wilt was playing with 2 other all stars so help wasn’t an issue. An by this graph we can see wilts team did better when he didn’t score as much
“Wilt led the league in assists”

First off Wilt chamberlain has never led the NBA in APG he led the NBA in total assists in 67-68 but didn’t led in APG. Because oscar averaged 9.7 APG compared to wilts 8.6 APG.
Now ur prolly wondering wilt chamberlain found a way to lead the nba in total assists. Well here are some quotes from his teammates:
This man Wilt litterally went out of his way to chase his assist stats - going as far as to AVOID passing to Hall of Fame teammate Chet Walker because he would most likely not get an assist from Walker under the format of recording assist statistics at the time.
And then people blame wilts teamates when they don’t score as much? heres how wilt chamberlain would got his assists (even tho his teammate didn’t make it) he would simply just throw a simple pass to his teammates instead of helping them create a look AKA a “rondo assists”
