I was in America for 5 months in 2015 before my daughter was born. I stayed there for another two months after she was born. I saw a manifestation of the racism I witnessed the year before in a different light. I was in a small North Carolina town and man!! There were racists.
I took a jog one morning and saw Confederate flags on well-manicured lawns of my neighbours and decided that it was not a place where I was welcome. I went to the only mall in the town and saw how suspiciously they looked at me. I had an experience in Cary I won't forget easily.
The rental company was grateful for my 5 months of rental (stupidity on my part) and upgraded me to a high end sports car. I decided to go for morning mass. Bad mistake. A policeman followed me from church for 30 minutes. Obviously, someone reported.
I had to drive into a Sams Club/Walmart parking lot and go into the shops. The policeman parked beside my car and was on his computer. I was worried at first but decided, fuck it! I went back to the car after 5 minutes and he was gone. I went to Avis RDU and changed the car.
I have a cousin on Instagram who is making waves as he flaunts his wealth publicly. Many don't understand why he does it but I do now. Sometimes, you have to show people that you are far ahead to gain respect and some dignity. His gorgeous wife is always live on Instagram too.
American Suburbia is deadly for the black man. I now understand why Nigerians are shy about grouping together in the suburbs. Most communities you find are urban.
