Harris was born and raised in Oakland, CA to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, and father, Donald Harris. Her mom immigrated to the States from India to study endocrinology and nutrition, while her dad was a Jamaican economics scholar. They were active in the Civil Rights Movement.

Kamala’s name comes from the Sanskrit word meaning "lotus" flower. #MeetKamala

In high school, Harris realized a friend was being sexually abused by the girl's own father; Harris invited the girl to live with her family. But Harris didn’t just show up for women and children in the courtroom. She developed a program with the @sfgov Public Health to help emergency rooms spot evidence of child sexual abuse, and she got San Francisco its first safe house for children escaping from sex work.

Kamala married her husband, Douglas Emhoff, in 2014 after they met on a blind date the year before. Emhoff had two kids from a previous relationship, who affectionately call Harris “Momala.” #MeetKamala

As California’s Attorney General, Kamala prosecuted transnational gangs that exploited women and children and trafficked in guns and drugs. She led comprehensive studies and investigations into the impacts of transnational criminal organizations and human trafficking.

As AG, Harris successfully sued predatory colleges that scammed students & veterans. She also established CA’s Bureau of Children’s Justice and reduced elementary school truancy so every child can exercise their right to education. #MeetKamala
