This thread is for all working on back to school plans. Teachers from Band to BASES( special needs), those in portables to classrooms, Elem to Secondary took the time to show the truth about how many kids can ACTUALLY fit into different classrooms @BCTF #bced @Rob_Fleming
Some bkgd on me, I am a secondary school teacher in Surrey BC, LA Matheson Secondary. I am an Aboriginal Dept Head with a non enrolling caeeload but also teach Social Sciences like Social Justice, and Law. I am a unionand Local rep, and do community advocacy. @RachnaSinghNDP
I do teach in a school that has quite a high level of students made vulnerable. It took weeks to establish and properly support families needing food, housing, tech, and mental health supports/security.
Surrey is the largest district in the province, where overcrowded schools are the norm, and with so many portables, they themselves could be a district. Critical underfunding over the past 20 years have left us in crisis mode. With COVID, problems are amolified @SurreyTeachers
We are all 100% committed to a full return to achool. We love our kids and families, school sites are 2nd homes for many. But our concerns from Health and Safety, to a strong continuation of growth and learning are incredibly valid.
What you will notice in all the pictures, there is simply no way to fit even 20 students into any type of classroom: band room, portable to regular size room. We teachers spent agonizing days trying to configure our rooms for June and for Sept.
