1/ I was rewatching #CobraKai last night for probably the 7th or 8th time, so I’m noticing little things. Things that make a huge difference in the quality of the show, but kinda just go by & get absorbed since it’s re: the shots/editing.
@jonhurwitz @healdrules @McSchlossberg

2/ Everyone talks about “the one-er” at the end of s02, but I think smaller scenes deserve a heck of a lot of credit too, especially since the show’s original home was YouTube TV. (vs an established streaming site w/money to burn.) When you pay attention to the sheer amount of..
3/ shots & edits in any given scene, you’ll see the pride that everyone involved in the production obviously had, making it look better than any “YouTube Original” show would be expected to look.
Stars must have aligned to get all the right folks at just the right time.

4/ But for example, s01e01, where Johnny leaves the house after being taunted by Daniel’s commercial. It could have just cut from him opening his apartment door to leave, straight to an overhead shot of him driving, but..
5/ they added this wonderful quick little montage (for lack of better word) where Johnny grabs his keys, shuts his door, keys in ignition, tape into the cassette player, headlights popping up, and shifting into gear before going to a wide shot of the car pulling out.

6/ They didn’t HAVE to, but they DID... and you may not have noticed it - but your brain did.
In fact, there are all kinds of “worth it” extra angles & edits all thru to where his car gets hit. I find myself wondering how much PITA it is to set up each shot, some which only..

7/ last for a second or two.
Okay, backtrack to when Johnny gets fired. They easily could have shot that at a generic location or Johnny’s apt - but for JUST that short scene they had this gorgeous shot of the city, expanding the CK world. I wonder if studio heads grump at..

8/ what they might consider “gratuitous” one-off location shots like that.
Okay, another ambitious production decision was Johnny’s flashback, biking from his home to the old CK dojo for the first time. Did you pay attention to how many period-accurate vehicles were there?

9/ For a scene which couldn’t have even lasted a minute, I can’t imagine the expense and effort it must have taken to get all the right cars. A cheaper show, or a show without caring creators... they may have tried to cheat and fudge the flashback in a more “bland” way.

10/ Lordy, I could go on and on, and I might sometime... heh... but the shots and edits in the s02e09 restaurant scene were perfect.
Not just the chemistry between actors, but getting just the right looks at the right times for all of their unspoken thoughts... brilliant.

11/ I know that slobbering over these “small” things makes me seem like a huge fanboy, and I suppose I am... but this show has amazing rewatchability, even if just to appreciate the amount of work it must have taken just to get the “raw footage” to cut down into what we got.

12/ “That’s hooker talk.” “I know you’re serious.” “You can spend it on whatever you want, that’s how money works.” Reelax, Danielle.” “I have OLD jeans, if that’s what you’re sayin.” “You’re lucky I didn’t kill HIM / I’m gonna tell him you said that. / Good. I WANT him to know.”
13/ The subtle way that, through both seasons, Amanda would literally or figuratively “put a hand on Daniel” to keep him from saying/doing something dumb.
Dimitri’s reaction to Sam brushing against him.
Eli knocking out Bert before casually joining the conversation...

14/ I don’t imagine many folks will see these tweets, as I’ve never aimed to gain followers. But if you love the show as well, and can think of some particular “smaller” scenes or edits that people seem to have missed, but impressed YOU... please feel free to add ‘em here.

15/ This rant brought to you by extensive re-viewings of the series, the anticipation of seeing s01 & s02 turn up on Netflix, and then of course the torture of waiting for s03 since we know it was in the can, edited, and close to “ready” *months* ago.

16/ And to the actors, writers, editors, producers, & everyone else working on this show... I hope that you really get how much this show means to so many folks of all ages. I’ll probably rewatch next week, only looking for unassuming “wow” shots & edits that I somehow missed.

PS/ Do TV series usually have much in the way of deleted or unused scenes? The bar fight made me wonder, the way the bully guy immediately said something about Tommy being the ugliest “make a wish” kid he’s ever seen, as if a scene could have revealed why they were there.

(tnx for that string of likes there, shadow ... once I clicked “tweet” I was like 98% sure that every twitter person would click and see 15 tweets in my thread and be like “NOPE”
)
