I remember when Bosslogic made this amazing work, close to the character reveal, there was a member of the AC Community tweeting at insane rates that you had to mute their bell notifications.(Y’all already know who it was)
As the beard was shown, ofcourse we all thought, that was it. Another AC game with a male protagonist similar to AC Origins. After Kassandra, we all hoped it was a female lead(or atleast a female reveal)
Then we got the news the Eivor came in a sticker. It was a leak but nonetheless that meant we had a female protagonist. For few months we didn’t get a chance to see Eivor.
Even then the marketing for her campaign was close to minimal. I remember the community waiting for a similar treatment as her counterpart.
Then came the allegations. This was devastating in all sense that people who used to inspire us were monsters. I couldn’t sleep or recover from it faster than others because some were role models I wished to become in the field.
We found that due to some misogynistic pigs in the higher ups decided to diminish or make male security blankets for female leads. Had it been with this game alone(not the franchise) we would have deemed it being creative differences. Even then it was misogynistic.
Then we found that it was the case ever since Aveline was introduced. She was not even marketed as strongly as Connor or Edward, being a PSVita exclusive.
Then came Syndicate, imo I didn’t know about Evie much until I played the game. Even in the game she was foreshadowed by exclusive missions for Jacob. Having the John the Ripper DLC was an honest breathe of fresh air.
Then was Origins, we now know that the devs planned to have Aya mid-game but was shelved. This led to a poor development which was reflected. Also Aya was one of the founder members of the Brotherhood. Is that why we didn’t get to play as her?
Odyssey came and got our first fully playable female (Kassandra) only to find out later that she was the canon choice. This also explained why the LoTFB DLC had shown Aya instead of Bayek. Thanks to “creative changes” by the higher ups, they made a security blanket with Alexios
Ubi should have detected these issues way before and acted too late. Even then their response wasn’t adequate at all. They even encouraged a sexist community to fester thanks to their practices.
Then that community member with crazy tweet account along with another amazing equally charged community member, started an amazing movement called #ACSisterhood , a play with the words on Brotherhood to tell Ubisoft enough is enough.
This movement is not intended to replace all the characters that was created before, but to make sure future potential ones aren’t shelved based on sexist views. If they hadn’t started the movement, pretty sure Ubi would let it slide as a fluff.
Thanks to them, we gained support from the devs, artists from Ubi to ensure us that such barriers are a thing of the past. It’s a long journey that Ubi needs to reform and I hope the do it too.
Another cool part of this movement is that it also extends to other studios who have done the same. The support gained is immeasurable. It’s no longer linked to AC or Ubi but to the gaming community as a whole.
Thank you @kulpreetvirdi and @Memento_Gallery for having that glass of wine. I hope someday when your ancestors relive the memory in the animus, they do the same. Thanks to all people who supported the cause. You are all awesome and inspirational to me and other members.
To those who are still against this. You can happily block me out because I will at you. :) it’s pretty much a no-brainer..
