a thread on disability
this was heavily inspired by @elcnasaIvarez’s thread which I’ll link https://twitter.com/elcnasaivarez/status/1293264403895205890?s=21 it’s super informative and you should definitely read! https://twitter.com/elcnasaivarez/status/1293264403895205890
most of this is coming from my personal experience so it’s probably going to be different to other disabled people’s experiences, i’m also going to be telling some stories of my experiences so i might need to add trigger warnings
there are many types of disability and a wide variety of causes. to simply list some, there is; developmental, learning, sensory, neurological and physical disabilities (and there’s probably more).
personally for me i have a form of celebral palsy called hemiplegia. hemiplegia affects one in a 1000 children and young people. it is most commonly caused a stroke. hemiplegia is where the one side of your body is weaker than the other. so i had a bleed on the left side of
brain so it affects my right etc. it also meant that i learnt to do everything with my left hand.
ableist language that is something that has become normalised in the english language and in society almost all of them having an extremely negative connotation towards those with disabilities
here are some of the words that are ableist and shouldn’t say, as a disabled person i try not to say them and this is why you shouldn’t use them
although it varies from differently to each person, i prefer being called a person with a disability as it’s putting the person first!
so now i’m going to share some of my experiences with dealing with ableism, i need to trigger warning some stuff because it was SO horrible
so first is going to be the slurs, i was called the r slur, the c slur, the s slur, and many more slurs and it was OFFENSIVE and people knew they were offending me but nobody did anything to stop it
second is going to be the comment “you don’t look disabled” “are you faking it”, “you’re just being lazy” “act more disabled” as a disabled person these are extremely ableist! a abled shouldnt determine what is a disability because disability is different and it’s not just one
thing. next is when people were IMITATING me trying to climb something. i confronted them yet they said to me “it wasn’t offensive, take a joke” again ableds shouldn’t say what’s ableist and what is not. what made it even worse is when i spoke to my head of year about the
incident, he did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and said “i was being too sensitive” now how ableist is that. he chose to ignore that they were mimicking me. I believe students can learn from example and to see a kind of authoritive figure completely dismiss ableism HURT
tw // nazis, ableism, death mentions

by FAR the worst experience ive faced is this history class. i haven’t spoken about it at all as i was SO upset about this. so i was in history an we were learning about the holocaust and who the nazi’s persecuted and disabled people
tw// nazis, ableism, death mentions

so SOMEONE in the class decided to say “amy youre disabled, you wouldv’e died!! hahah” like what the fuck. like just what the fuck and i wish i joking but im not
ive had comments about using the disabled toliets, i use the disabled toliets as i’m disabled and i feel that it gives me more room. i don’t need stares from people because i’m not their perception of a person with a disability
if you ever meet a disabled person or one of your friends is disabled one of the most important things to do is to not treat them any differently than you would someone without a disability. we just want to be treated the same
if you’re disabled friend looks like they need help, ALWAYS ask before helping. people with disabilities usually like to have their own independence, they don’t want to feel like they can’t do anything
also PLEASE PLEASE don’t try to ‘cure’ us because i’m sure most of the time people with disabilities don’t want to be cured, for example a wheelchair user, many wheelchair users find that the wheelchair gives them freedom
another important thing is asking questions . asking questions are important in the right time, etc and can be key to learning more about each individual disabled person because we all are so different. while i may not be able to speak on behalf of all people with disabilities
i can give the best answers i can based on what other disabled people have told me.
i’ve also created two other threads which are under my pinned! it’s more about ableism set in glee and the musical wicked.
i think i’m going to wrap this thread up but thanks for reading 💕
