I've played a part in it, but the Ronald Jones debate has spiraled into one of our worst as a community. I'm going to try to give my thoughts here without trolling anyone. Let's see if we can come to any type of agreement.
RoJo the player has been a mixed bag. He's shown big play ability (some of which were called back), he's also left yards on the field. He's been awful as a blocker, but was better as a receiver last year. He's also young enough where we could still expect improvement.
His head coach is not the biggest liar ever. But his proclamations have led us astray in the past. He named RoJo the starter last year and then he saw almost exactly the same volume & played 50% of the snaps just twice in the final 8 games. On a per game basis he was a flex.
What his head coach has shown in the past is a pretty strong deference to veterans. We just don't know if third year player counts as a veteran yet. But the Shady signing can rightly be viewed as a 🚨, at least for third down work.
Speaking of his competition, it's middling at best. They may all be better pass blockers than Jones, but none have his upside with the ball. If he plays up to his potential he should easily touch the ball >225 times. But again, he's struggled to play to his potential consistently
IMO we're left with a No. 3 running back. I wouldn't be all that surprised if he finishes around RB20. I won't be all that surprised if he's benched Week 3 and then starting by Week 6. He is not someone you can count on as a starter, but there's obviously starter upside.
But I don't believe that just because of his age he qualifies as a top-12 upside guy. He's unlikely to be a true workhorse with a big role in the passing game & he doesn't have Henry/Chubb/Jacobs rushing upside.
Maybe he has a little more upside than David Montgomery (maybe) but he's far more likely, IMO, to bust than Montgomery. Montgomery upside with Singletary floor? That's a Round 6 pick at best for me.
