Being #pregnant during a #pandemic is no picnic. My advice having experienced it: trust your gut (& public health officials). You do not need to put yourself or your fetus in harms way for other’s ignorance. Demand mask wearing & social distancing or bye

Early in the #pandemic, there was little evidence that #pregnant people were more susceptible to #SARSCoV2. But, there was a problem with that. Reporting of pregnant people who test positive for #COVID19 is voluntary and insufficient (explained well here https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/10/parenting/pregnancy/pregnancy-coronavirus-data.html)
W/o the numbers, we end up knowing very little abt COVID19 during #pregnancy/postpartum. Tbh, I was skeptical of any claim that #pregnant ppl were not more susceptible. They were for #SARS-CoV (2002-2004) & they are for #influenza. Why would this respiratory disease be different?
TW: maternal and infant mortality. Last month the CDC released their first report on #pregnant people with #COVID. Some results were difficult to interpret but it did suggest higher risk for severe illness in pregnant vs non pregnant people. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/special-populations/pregnancy-data-on-covid-19.html
TW: maternal and infant mortality. Though race data was missing for 20%, Black and Latino #pregnant people were disproportionately affected across all age grps - a trend observed in nonpregnant grps as well. Again, we are failing pregnant people of color. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6925a1.htm
The black hole of info on the effects of viral infections in #pregnantpeople is large and grows even larger when we consider in utero effects on the fetus. For example, fever/inflammation in early pregnancy has been assoc w/ birth defects https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/features/kf-birthdefects-maternal-fever-during-pregnancy.html
Which makes it even more concerning that #pregnant ppl are not considered in clinical trials of a #COVID19vaccine. I understand the concerns but ignoring this vulnerable population won’t make them go away. They need prevention & treatment options too. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-vaccines-pregnancy-idUSKCN24W1NZ
