With Biden's pick due any minute/hour/day and speculation at its most feverish, here's a thread showing how coverage of Dem VP jockeying looked at the 11th hour in past campaigns:
First up: 1976. Jimmy Carter's list is down to 6, all Senators: Adlai Stevenson, John Glenn, Frank Church, Scoop Jackson, Ed Muskie and Walter Mondale. Here's NBC's look at the pros and cons for each. Part 1:
And part 2 -- with John Chancellor noting that Mondale "would get the best press -by far":
1984: Leading Dems say Walter Mondale has dragged out his VP process too long and risks looking weak as he considers: Mayors Dianne Feinstein and Henry Cisneros, Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, and Sens. Lloyd Bentsen and Gary Hart:
1988: Michael Dukakis' VP search head interviews Jesse Jackson - but the favorites are Sen. Albert Gore and Rep. Lee Hamilton, with Rep. Richard Gephardt and Sens. John Glenn and Lloyd Bentsen not ruled out. "A pick could come as soon as tomorrow" -- and it did.
1992: With Bill Clinton mulling Rep. Lee Hamilton and Sens. Bob Kerrey, Harris Wofford and Al Gore, Today host Bryant Gumbel pushes panelists Al Hunt, Andrea Mitchell and Tim Russert for their best guess of who it will be:
2000: As Al Gore arrives in Nashville to confer with his team and make a final decision, sources tell NBC that there are now three front-runners for the VP slot: Sens. Joseph Lieberman, John Kerry and John Edwards:
2004: "Tonight Sen. John Kerry is said to be possibly just hours away from announcing his choice of a running mate" -- with Gov. Tom Vilsack, Rep. Richard Gephardt and Sen. John Edwards seen as the most likely picks from what has been a low-key process:
2008: With reporters tracking the movements of private jets and sources saying that Gov. Tim Kaine and Sen. Evan Bayh are out of the running, @mitchellreports says that "it is looking more and more like Sen. Joe Biden is the choice" of Barack Obama:
And 2016: With the Republican convention still in progress, Hillary Clinton indicates she will reveal her pick in Florida in the next 1-2 days -- with Sen. Tim Kaine and former Gov./Ag. Secretary Tom Vilsack in contention, and Sen. Cory Booker getting some late attention too:
