Let's talk cycle cameras! I'm going to run through my set up, give my advice and answer any questions any of you have. So do ask!
This is using a K-edge XL Combo mount. They also do mounts for just cameras. The camera is a GoPro Hero 5 Black 1/12
My rear camera is using a K-edge saddle rail mount. Obviously can't fit a saddle bag which may be a downside for some. I like the K-edge mounts as they are strong. Been using them for around 45,000 miles and not had a single one break. The camera is a GoPro Session 5 2/12
On my commuting bike, I have the same K-edge mount but my light is mounted under the Garmin. So I use a regular K-edge GoPro mount and rotate it slightly round, this means you get some of my bars in the shot for reference. 3/12
On my helmet I use a GoPro vented helmet mount, with a Garmin to GoPro mount to secure my Garmin Virb 360 camera. 4/12
It's important to get a reference in the video. On my underbar camera, I have a good portion of the tyre is in the shot. This gives a good reference to how close things are or aren't. The camera also has a wide-angle to get lots of info in. 5/12
The view from behind the bars shows the brake hoods, braking, and gear changes are visible as well as some of the data on the Garmin (light reflections depending). 6/12
Again the view from the rear is adjusted as such to get some of the rear tyre into shot for reference. 7/12
360 cameras are COOL! All really easy to knock up with the Garmin software (others are available).
Note: A few jitters because my helmet mount wasn't tight enough, so vibrating. 8/12
My Camera brand recomendations:
- GoPro - Pretty much the best kit avaliable
- Garmin - best for other garmin integration
- Drift Ghost - Great battery life
- Cycliq - Integrated camera and lights, great battery life
9/12
Cheap cameras can be ok, but watch videos of other people using them before you buy. As the quality can be poor and the FOV too narrow. Trying to get the number plate from cheaper cameras can be hard! 10/12 https://twitter.com/velobetty/status/1280593578776027137
A secure and solid mount really makes the difference! I avoid using the GoPro screws as you can't get them right by hand. I don't even use the standard k-edge screws as the heads are too small and break. 11/12
Things to considering when buying:
- battery life
- footage quality
- FOV
- low light quality
- loop mode
- mounting options
- other features (lights, 360, form factor etc..)
