One thing that bothers me about the perseverance of the saints is that it is so often thrown around as an explanation of why someone left the faith. i. e. “I guess that they never truly believed.” When viewed and used this way, it’s a harsh doctrine that causes pain. But that’s
not the point of the doctrine. It’s meant to remind us that God doesn’t give up on us when we’re struggling or doubting, because our struggles and doubts don’t make us lose our faith. Instead it’s God’s faithfulness through Jesus that holds us secure. Additionally, this is meant
to comfort us when someone does walk away from the faith, because we know that ultimately their future is in the hands of a just, merciful, and loving God who never gives up on His children. When viewed this way, this is a life-giving, encouraging doctrine. As it should be.
