Lot’s of talk about UBI. FWIW, here’s my take:

UBI doesn’t replace an effective social safety net.

We can’t buy our way out of poverty & inequality perpetuated by successive govts that have weakened the social safety net & increased privitization & profiting from public goods.
We can’t buy our way out of a housing affordability crisis. UBI doesn’t replace the required regulations to maintain housing affordability.

Without tenant protections, we can expect more mass evictions by large corps who want to capture the increase in income promised by UBI.
We can’t buy our way out of providing a living wage. This is a social responsibility borne by all sectors.

UBI itself won’t strengthen labour rights.

The rise of the gig economy shows just how precious, not precarious, our labour market regulations should be.
We can’t buy our way to tax reform. UBI should be delivered by more than a cash transfer.

If we raise social assist. rates, we need to raise min. wage & inc. earnings exemptions, for say, the bottom 40% of income earners.

UBI requires sweeping changes across all levels of govt.
We can’t buy our way out of widening income inequality.

UBI doesn’t address the tax reform issues that permit wealth to be hoarded at the expense of a strong social safety net.

We need to tax wealth. And invest in programs & infrastructure. And stop corporate giveaways.
We can’t buy our way out of how critical social assistance programs are. UBI doesn’t solve for disability rights & supports.

We don’t need UBI to do what’s right. Let’s increase social assistance rates now. It will take some political courage. But let’s aspire to do what’s right
We can’t just buy our way to healthier lives. UBI doesn’t replace the need for universal pharmacare.

Creating a national universal pharmacare program ensures people don’t need to liquidate their assets to qualify for social assistance. People can work without fear.
We can’t buy our way to a gender-based lens to social policy.

UBI isn’t going to solve, for example:
- Proper remuneration for care work
- Universal child care
- Increased social assistance rates
- Expanded paid sick leave
- Increase funding for community & social services
As the famed singer, Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls, once said ‘Mo Money, Mo Problems’

As a community economic developer, I’ve long advocated for reforms to raise the standard of living for our most vulnerable.

UBI needs to bring with it a harmonized suite of changes.
I guess I worry that UBI lets those responsible for our social safety net off the hook.

I worry that UBI is the next neoliberal promise that merely exacerbates systemic inequality & doesn’t solve the problems that led us to the weakening of the social safety net to begin with.
