I went to bed early because I& #39;m 137 and can& #39;t keep my eyes open past 10pm. I woke up and saw the discourse going on in our awesome community. As a writer with zero formal training who is now being read & validated by people I& #39;ve looked up to for years, here& #39;s what I& #39;ve learned...
Write a good story
That is LITERALLY all that matters. I& #39;ve read and listened to all the things and I break ALL of the "rules". I will WE SEE you to death. I write in specific songs. I have artistic title pages. I use VO and flashbacks. I go over page count...

If you can manage to grab your reader by the eyeballs and use your storytelling to say, "You& #39;re not going anywhere so don& #39;t even think about turning away!", they& #39;ll be like, okay, cool. They will take the ride happily and not even notice whatever "rules" you broke.
I wish someone had told me somewhere within my first 5 yrs of trying to write screenplays to focus less on formatting and "rules" and more on how to tell a good fucking story. But that was my journey and I& #39;m grateful for it. Happy writing and let& #39;s make it an awesome day!
