The Samaritans have issued new guidelines on the reporting of suicide that may be noteworthy for those who constantly cite the high risk of suicide as a reason for swift transitioning particularly of children.
There is a special section on youth suicides and clusters because young people are so much more prone to ideation and imitation or the 'normalising' of suicide.
Don’t refer to a possible rise in suicides... among a particular group as an ‘epidemic’ or other similar term. Evidence suggests that reference to clusters can
lead to additional suicides.
Don’t use sensationalised language.
Avoid speculation around the causes of a young
person’s suicide. For example, when a suicide is
reported and bullying is cited as the cause, this
could affect others experiencing bullying who may be feeling hopeless. Making direct links about causes
oversimplifies suicide.
Suicide clusters occur primarily among teenagers and
young adults.
The guidelines state that young people are less likely to possess the emotional maturity to help them see a way through difficult life problems. They may be less likely to grasp the permanence of suicide, which increases their risk of suicidal contagion
Surely this would apply to gender identity confusion, and the permanent effects of some gender reassignment procedures, too. And if suicide can be contagious and occur in clusters, why not gender dysphoria?
The research literature identifies the phenomenon known as ‘suicide contagion’. This occurs when a suicide or attempted suicide serves as a ‘model’ for subsequent suicidal behaviour. The ‘model’ could be a famous person or celebrity, but could also be a relative or friend.
Again, wouldn't the same psychological factors apply to gender identity...?
Suicide stats in the States went up 10% on the previous year after Robin Williams' death. It would be interesting if stats were analysed to see if there were spikes at GICs after celebrity reassignment - or celebrities announcing their children are trans.
