Positions and programs created from white guilt and public shame are designed to last only as long as the guilt and shame do.

Which is to say: not very long.
I& #39;m not necessarily a person who& #39;s against participation in those programs or applying for those positions. A brief stint of prestige can lead to a longer, more stable job. Or, at minimum,it can be beneficial for professional development (particularly if you& #39;re new to the field).
It& #39;s just better for everyone (and especially the applicant), if they know exactly what it is: a short-term, performative solution to a systemic problem people aren& #39;t exercised to solve.
It& #39;s also good for the new hire to go in knowing exactly what it is so that when they& #39;re faced with resentment and dismissal-of-ideas and other slights from colleagues, they& #39;ll be well-prepared to respond.
