In 2017 SOMEONE decided in Crans Montana to end the #Cyprus talks & persue a “better” solution by getting the upper hand exploring & selling natural gas. Becoming rich & influencial imposing anything he wants. Here is the result:

1) The arrangement of a costly transmed pipeline considered “unviable”. The route could not be secured due to sea delimination disputes. Gas is dirty cheap.

In order to facilitate this “gas dream” many multilateral agreements have been made. This led to a false sense of existential threat for TR that led her hold onto Cyprus even more. TR beefed up military existance with drones and ships based in CY.

The aggresive EEZ delimination pursuit pulled Aegean & GR into dispute with TR bringing everyone in the region closer to an armed conflict.

All this “tough times” postponed a gradual change in TR politics, prolonging Erdogan’s influence as “external threats” posed an excuse for him to stay in power.

In hope of getting political leverage CY & GR made many concessions (bases, agreements) to several western powers losing its actual diplomatic power of “balanced/multifaced” diplomacy becoming a “useful tool” instead of an “actor”.

In 2020, just after 3 years we risk losing parts of our EEZ, warships roam around the island, elevated threat of an armed conflict, no gas, no peace...
