in these times, words feel so little, but the revulsion that wracks through my body can only be expressed in words. words and prayers. may every person seeking refuge find safety with dignity and humanity. may all the borders crumble. may all the tyrants be toppled. ameen.
also just wanna day it is important to recognise that the callousness we are seeing towards people seeking refuge is two things:
1st it is part & parcel of how white supremacists empires work. The death of racialised people is inherent to the imperialist extraction that Britain has invested in for decades. Refugee precarity & dehumanisation is not incidental, Britain’s necropolitical structure demands it
2nd it is, as ever, a method of displacement. By focusing on the body / boat of the refugee we lose sight of the context in which a person seeking refuge emerges. We lose sight of it because to see it would implicate the British state & the consent-giving British public
It would implicate British shareholders, British economy & Britain’s policies at home & abroad. This nation-state is murderous and we must not lose sight of that. That is where our gaze must settle and our energy be directed.
Every refugee is a human being made unhuman deliberately and decisively. Those news reporters are not “bad apples” they’re just the voices of a machine working as it’s meant to.
