Thread: It is very good news that health and social care workers are to receive mandatory training in learning disabilities and autism, named after Oliver McGowan who died after being prescribed an antipsychotic he was known to be sensitive to. 1/
The training however will need to be given to many differing groups.
To the doctors who specialise in the fields of psychiatry, learning disability, epilepsy who sometimes fail to understand learning disability, autism and atypical epilepsies 2/
and who sometimes prescribe antipsychotics inappropriately.

To social care staff who are supporting people daily and need to know how to support people through daily difficulties to live their best life. 3/
To health care staff in ATUs to learn non punitive approaches to helping people with learning disabilities and/or autism.

To staff in emergency departments. Perhaps there could be a room set aside for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. 4/
Keep the noise down. Keep the lights down. Keep the number of people down. And take time to listen and explain. No repeated barrages of questions.
These are just some of the many different groups who will get training. 5/
Above all – educate staff to respect and listen to the patient and the people who know them well.

I would hate this to end up like some annual mandatory NHS trust training I have attended where I was shocked to see staff on their mobile phones during the training.6/
I think the involvement of learning disabled and autistic people in designing and delivering training is essential and will make it far more relevant and impactful.

It is going to be difficult and complicated to organise but I wish it the very best. END
