Debunking some COVID19 myths Americans have about NZ.

1. NZ is homogenous compared to the US:

40% of NZers are part of Māori, Pacific Islander, or Asian ethnic groups.
Myth 2: New Zealand doesn’t have overweight/obese* people

2.5 million NZ adults are classified as overweight or obese.

1 in 3 NZ adults are classified as obese

(*I hate that term and BMI is bullshit)
Myth 3: New Zealanders are wealthy

60% of wealth is held by top 10% of wealthiest people.

If you don’t own a home, the median net worth is NZD$39,000.

Almost half of all adult NZers do not own a home.
Myth 4: NZ has low population density.

Yes, the overall density is low. But, as LOTR may have shown you, we have a lot of mountains. Like, a LOT.

1 in 3 live in Auckland. Yes, 1/3 of us in one city.

2/3 of NZers live in one of our 20 biggest cities.

Only 14% live rurally.
Myth 5: NZ is an island.

You were so close on this one. So close. We live on an archipelago. That means there is _multiple_ islands.

You are right that we don’t have land borders, though. And we’re the first to tell you this made COVID response easier.
