As a fellow 2nd generation K-Pop fan, this comment is disappointing to me. It’s okay to not like certain songs from today’s K-Pop, but saying how its current music is “terrible” gives me the impression that they did not give today’s generation a chance. So I have recommendations+
First, of course, my favorite group— BTS! Their previous album Map Of the Soul: 7, one of my fave albums, continues to show how much they have grown as artists and continues the theme of loving yourself.
Highlight songs include: ON, UGH, and Black Swan
Red Velvet just debuted their 1st sub unit group, Irene & Seulgi! They released their debut EP that has incredible songs like “Monster.” They also came out w/ “Naughty,” which, if you love BoA, you’re going to love because it has that classic BoA sound.
Seventeen JUST came back with their song “Left & Right,” which continues to play with new sounds as they grow as artists like the artists I have previously listed here and more. I also want to highlight “Hit” because it’s THAT good.
Dreamcatcher has been giving amazing rock-heavy pop music since their debut song “Chase Me.” They have been consistent with their sound & concepts and has one of their best albums in their career which features “Scream” (playing here!)
They’re also preparing for a comeback this year with “Boca” so be on the lookout for that!
I can’t forget about NCT & all of their sub units! The 7th Sense (NCT U), Love Talk ( WavyV), Cherry Bomb (NCT 127), Go (NCT Dream)— the list goes on and on. If you’re a TVXQ fan, I recommend Super Human because it gives off Humanoids vibe.
I can’t continue this thread without adding LOONA. From their members’ individual solo songs to sub units to their full group songs, I can’t stress enough how musically colorful this artist is and just pushes visual boundaries like Butterfly.
And if you’re looking for soloists, you’re in luck! Eric Nam has been releasing incredible music including releasing a fantastic all-English album last year! He came back with “Paradise,” which the visuals has a powerful message of wanting perfection.
Chungha has been releasing gorgeous music including Gotta Go, Love U, Snapping, and, recently, Play. One of my favorite songs by her is Stay Tonight. It has that elegant way of feeling your bad bitch self. Also voguing. Who doesn’t love that?
Tomorrow X Together (TXT) has one of best debuts in 2019. They came back with Can’t You See Me and Eternally off of their album “The Dream Chapter: Eternity.” One of my personal faves by them is New Rules from “The Dream Chapter: Magic!”
If you’re wondering any 2nd gen artists released music today? Yes! Taemin recently made a comeback with 2 Kids! The message behind the song is very emotional & shows how much Taemin has grown since debuting in SHINee. Plus the MV is aesthetically pleasing
Lee Hi also came back but now signed under AOMG (Thank GOD). She released a single called Holo and if this song doesn’t make you cry and feel so many emotions then I don’t know what to tell you. Please support Lee Hi!
Sunmi recently released this gorgeous, 80s aesthetically pleasing song, Pporappippam! It’s a slight change from her previous songs like Gashina, 24 Hours, and Noir, yet it is like Heronine but a more lighthearted. Even then, it still have Sunmi’s charm.
Day6 released their latest album, The Demon, which has songs with impactful messages ranging from mental health to personal struggles in the real world. Zombie (both Korean & English version) captures this in the most vulnerable yet connective way.
Oh My Girl caught my eye recently with Nonstop. I knew that they have been around for a while, but it wasn’t until this song that I finally gave their latest album a listen. It is great and worth checking out!
Gfriend has been making beautiful songs that doesn’t boxed them in as only known for Rough. Their most recent single, Apple, continues this and proves that Gfriend is THAT group.
Of course I can’t forget about Monsta X. They have putting fantastic music including but limited to: Beautiful (the song that got me into them), Dramamama, their entire English album, and their most recent single, Fantasia!
Gonna take a break from this thread for now. The moral of all this is take the time to listen to today’s K-Pop artists. Even if they’re still not your cup of tea, they deserve a chance to listen w/ respect. Saying they’re terrible means you’re missing out on something beautiful.
