Kuala Lumpur 2009, launch of Musawah (movement for equality & justice in Muslim family): British Muslim woman told me “If I had to choose between Islam & feminism, I’d choose Islam”; Egyptian Muslim woman told me “If I had to choose between Islam & feminism, I’d choose feminism.” https://twitter.com/monaeltahawy/status/1292968537032663040
Where Muslims live as minorities, Islam can be a source of pride and identity and way to stand up to white supremacy and racism.

In Muslim-majority counties, Islam can be a source of oppression, used by regimes and political Islamic movements alike.

There is always a #NotAll.
And it can be very difficult to explain to Muslims who live as minorities and those in majority situations that their experiences of Islam are very different and contextual.
I am not an Islamic feminist.

I am a feminist who is a woman of Muslim descent.

I have experienced the various forms I describe above - in Egypt, UK, Saudi Arabia, USA.

And multiple places in between.

There is no monolith.
