Are people aware that #BlackIsKing is not in fact a documentary on every single minute aspect of African life: past, present and future? Do people not realize that Beyoncé used actual African minds and artists, celebs who’ve BEEN doing this before all this to do these visuals?
Are we actually taking into account the mind-blowing level of diversity the continent has?! Someone was complaining about East Africa not being represented as though Ethiopian culture wasn’t definitely in there.
Did those complaining about romanticization miss the “ugliness” and poverty in there in multiple scenes?! I’m truly confused about these complaints, especially since the loudest are from people who haven’t set foot or weren’t even raised on the continent.
And if you read this thread and immediately thought: “oh a Stan”— that’s exactly where the problem is. You’re not seeking to learn a different perspective or learn outside of what you know. And that’s fine, we all do that. Just don’t come at me based on that assumption
