/ A terrible illusion underground musicians have suffered since the 00's is the belief that we have the potential to be part of the pop world– while true, it's more actually false– like poor Americans whose whole worldview is built on the belief they may be billionaires someday
/ What we can and should do is give this up, and split the music industry. Let ‘em have the pop market while we thrive inside our own. We should all pull our music from every site except Bandcamp, and turn Spotify and their ilk into nothing more than the Kiss FMs of streaming.
/ We can build our fanbases through our own outreach & work instead of waiting for a golden ticket from a corporation. We invest in BC because their commission model allows us to make money for them transparently. They understand the symbiotic healths of artist and distributor.
/ If we do better, they do better- sustainably & continually. Spotify neglects this. I think all of us are of a similar feeling: I’m ready to jump ship as long as everyone else does. We’re so conditioned to obsess over the competitive aspect of trying to be heard in capitalism.
/ Why don’t we just make a petition saying once it gets a million signatures, every signatory agrees to pull their music from Spotify etc, at that time? It’ll be a big enough number to make a difference & if we all pull the trigger at once, we can avoid that fear of competition.
/ It’s a bold move to say, “Give up the dream of hitting it big.” But this isn’t giving it up. It’s creating our own world, and thereby our own potential to get big outside of those machinations which we all hate. And more importantly,
/ accepting that we can have a lifetime of work is actually BIG ENOUGH for almost all of us. No one needs to be a millionaire, and you can make a good living with a relatively small number of loyal fans if you are paid fairly. 🕯❤️🕯
