A critical part in Moonlight is when Chiron heats up water on the stove so that he can have a hot bath.

I feel like he spends the rest of the film chasing after a sort of body warmth, that the world has made him cold to.

Wanted to accentuate that.
It’s interesting to think about Moonlight in terms of chasing warmth.

It seems perfect that Andre Holland’s Kevin always visually feels warm.

We may not consciously register it.

But, for example, he’s a smoke-breathing cook.
I don’t think any of this is textual or subtextual.

But, because Chiron is a Greek character, it’s fun to think of another Greek character.

Icarus.

Who flew too close to the sun on wings his father gave him, that they melted, and he flapped his bare arms before falling.
Icarus’ father warned him about that and when Icarus fell, after getting too close to that warmth, he drowned in the sea.

Chiron’s de facto father:
I don’t think this stuff is hyper intentional.

But, Chiron in that black, absorbing light, absorbing heat.

Kevin in that white, giving off light, giving off heat.

And look behind Kevin, too.

Almost as if he comes out of that sunny jukebox to the blue clad Chiron.
Anyway, just interesting to think of the film through temperatures, light, etc, etc.

Because that’s the thing.

Moonlight needs sunlight.

It needs the sun’s warmth to be seen.
I also believe there was something you said on the Beale Street director’s commentary, about how even if the audience doesn’t notice production design, it helps the actors to truly believe, and we feel their belief.

Anyway.

Someone extremely, extremely, extremely close, beyond close, to the source material, just brought this to my attention.

So, yeah.

I’d like to go ahead and retract that this idea isn’t subtextual.

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

This precedes the moment that changes everything for Chiron.
